What still stands from between 1869 and 1877 in Burlington, Vermont?

Back to North Champlain Street

222 North Champlain Street

This two-story, gable front with an eaves side entrance faces west between Manhattan Drive and Cedar Street.  The floor plan of the building has been altered very little since its construction.  The porch has been enclosed, but for the most part the structure remains largely unchanged.

The first occupant of the house was George Rand, an employee of Townsend & Hill, previously of Champlain Street [1] between Pearl and Cherry Streets, who moved to a house near North Bend on North Champlain Street in 1869 [2] .  It is not clear to which house he moved, but in 1881 the city directory, George Rand is listed as living at 222 North Champlain.  George Rand's occupation changed during his living at this address from a carpenter to working for a number of local firms to an undertaker.

The name listed on the property is T.F. Ahearn.  Thomas F. Ahearn lived on Rose Street [3] .  After 1902 the house was lived in by many different people [4] each not for very long period.
