MARRIED Chester McDonald Smith, 02 December 1850 by the Rev. R.H. Hazen of Westminster, CT. The son of Fuller Smith and Miriam Rowell, he was born 05 March 1820, and died 15 September 1903.  Following Sarah’s death, he married Mary A. (Jackman) Swan, 01 July 1866 in Rochester, VT.

1.      Jacob Frary Smith, b. 06 August 1852, d. 08 August 1917.

2.      Hattie M. Smith, b. about 1858, d. 07 March 1872 at the age of 14.

1840 Canterbury, Windham County, CT.  Sarah is living in the household of her father, Asher Smith.
1850 Canterbury, Windham County, CT (dwelling 179).  Sarah M. Smith (28) is living in the household of her parents, Asher (63), a carpenter, Lucinda (65), and younger sister Harriet L. (26).  Real estate $500.
1860 Rochester, Windsor County, VT (dwelling 198).  Chester (40 VT) and Sarah (39 CT) Smith are listed with the following children:  Jacob (8) and Hattie (2).  Sarah’s sister “Hattie” is enumerated next, followed by her brother John and his wife and children.
1870 Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  A widowed Fuller Smith is living with son Chester (50 VT), his second wife Maryann (47 NY), Chester's children with Sarah M. Smith: Jacob (16) and Hattie (10), and Maryann’s son Westly Swan (12).   They are living next door to Fuller’s daughter Elizabeth (Smith) Dyer Root.  Chester’s real estate value is $4,000; his personal estate is worth $700.
1880 Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  Chester M. Smith (60) is in Rochester with second wife Mary A. (57), and son Jacob F. (28), a widower.  Jacob’s young wife, Maria L. Brown had died 25 April 1880 at the age of 18.
1900 Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  Chester Smith (born March 1820) is living with his granddaughter Mabel, born October 1882.  His son Jacob (b. August 1852) remains in Rochester with his second wife, Lilla (b. February 1860).  Jacob’s son Chester was born January 1886.  They had one other surviving child as well, Mabel.
NOTES

First cousin to her husband, Chester M. Smith.  Sarah’s father Asher Smith, b. 19 October 1787, was the younger brother of Chester’s father Fuller Smith, b. 11 September 1785.

Niece to Fuller Smith, husband of “Mrs. Miriam Smith.”

First cousin and sister-in-law to “Mrs. Elizabeth M. Dyer” and “Miss Olive T. Smith.”
