MARRIED Fuller Smith, 04 December 1809 in Braintree, Orange County, VT. The son of Nathaniel Smith and Pauline Fuller, he was born 11 September 1785 in Canterbury Township, Windham County, CT, and died of “old age” in West Rochester, VT, 04 December 1873 at the age of 88.

Note: The Barbour Collection of vital records in Connecticut lists Fuller’s parents as Nathaniel Smith and Lucy Wilkinson. His death certificate, however, notes Pauline Fuller, which seems more likely given his name.

Based on census records, at least six children:

1.      Oliver P. Smith, b. about 1811, d. 09 January 1893 in Leicester, VT, m. Lovina Chase.

2.      Unknown daughter, b. 1815-1820.

3.      Chester McDonald Smith, b. 05 March 1820, d. 15 September 1903 in Rochester, VT of “mitral regurgitation” (a heart disorder) and “senility,” m. 1) Sarah M. Smith, 02 December 1850 in CT; 2) Mary A. (Jackman) Swan, 01 July 1866 in Rochester, VT.

4.      Elizabeth Maria Smith, b. 26 February 1822, Rochester, VT, d. 24 January 1908 of “acute bronchitis,” Rochester VT, m. 1) Ephraim Dyer, 2) David Root.

5.      Isaac D. Smith, b. 1824, d. 22 June 1855.

6.      Olive T. Smith, b. 03 February 1827, d. 03 August 1909 in Brandon, VT, m. 1) John Q.A. White, 2) John Lyons.

FEDERAL CENSUS RECORDS

1790 Sutton, Merrimack County, VT.  The Jona. Rowell family  consists of two males over the age of 16, one male under 16 years, and two females (including Miriam).
1800 Sutton, Merrimack County, VT.  The Jonathan Rowell family consists of one male between the ages of 26-44, two males under 10, one female 26-44, one female under 10, and one female 10-15 (Miriam).
1810  
1820 Hancock, Addison County, VT (taken 24 January 1820).  The Fuller Smith family consists of one male between the ages of 26-45 (Fuller), two males under 10 (Oliver and Chester?), one female 26-45 (Miriam), and one female under the age of 10 (Unknown).
1830 Goshen, Addison County, VT.  The Fuller Smith family is enumerated next to the Horace Brink and William Brink families.  There is one male aged 40-50 (Fuller), one male 5-10 (Isaac), one male 10-15 (Chester), one male 15-20 (Oliver), one female 40-50 (Miriam), one female under 5 (Olive), one female 5-10 (Elizabeth), and one female 10-15 (Unknown).
1840 Goshen, Addison County, VT.  The Fuller Smith family includes one male between the ages of 50-60 (Fuller), two males 15-20 (Chester and Isaac), one female 50-60 (Miriam), and one female 10-15 (Olive).  They are living next door to William and Polly Brink.  Likely son Oliver is enumerated separately in the same town with a wife and three young children.  The population of the town at that time was 621. 
1850 Rochester, Windsor County, VT (dwelling 119).  The children of Fuller (65 CT) and Marion Smith (63 NH) are listed as:  Chester M. (30), Isaac (26), and Elizabeth (28), wife of Ephraim Dyer—all born in Vermont. 
1860 Rochester, Windsor County, VT (dwelling 201).  Fuller (74 CT) and Marion (73 NH) live next door to Elizabeth (Smith) Dyer Root (38), and to Chester M. Smith (40), his wife Sarah (39), and their children Jacob (8) and Hattie (2).
1870 Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  A widowed Fuller Smith is living with son Chester (50 VT), his second wife Maryann (47 NY), Chester's children with Sarah M. Smith: Jacob (16) and Hattie (10), and Maryann’s son Westly Swan (12).   They are living next door to Fuller’s daughter Elizabeth (Smith) Dyer Root.  Chester’s real estate value is $4,000; his personal estate is worth $700.
1880 Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  Chester M. Smith (60) is in Rochester with wife Mary A. (57), and son Jacob F. (28).
1900 Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  Son Chester Smith (born March 1820) remains in Rochester, living with his granddaughter Mabel, born October 1882.   His son Jacob (b. August 1852) remains in Rochester with wife Lilla (b. February 1860).  Their son Chester was born January 1886.  They have one other surviving child as well (Mabel).
