MARRIED Oliver P. Smith, about 1835.  The son of Fuller Smith and Miriam Rowell, he was born about 1811 in Vermont, and died 09 January 1893 in Leicester, VT at the age of 82.
CHILDREN

1.       Mary F. Smith, b. about 1836, m. George S. Laird.

2.       Joel B. Smith, b. March 1838.  He served as a private in Company A of the 16th Vermont Infantry from 1862-1863.  He applied for an invalid’s pension in 1866, and his wife, Julina B. Smith applied for a widow’s pension in 1910.

3.       Franklin D. Smith, b. 31 December 1840, d. 01 August 1877 of “fits” at the age of 36.   He never married.

4.       Lucy R. Smith, b. about 1845, m. Edward Green.

FEDERAL CENSUS RECORDS

1830 Goshen, Addison County, VT.  The Abner Chase household includes one male between the ages of 60-70, one male 10-15, one male 5-10, one male under 5, one female 40-50, one female 20-30 (likely Lovina), one female 10-15, one female 5-10.
1840 Goshen, Addison County, VT.  The Oliver Smith household includes three children:  two males under age 5 (Joel and Franklin), and one female under age 5 (Mary).
1850 Rochester, Windsor County, VT (dwelling 127).  Oliver P. Smith (39 VT) and Lovina (47 VT) are living in Rochester with their children Mary F. (14), Joel B. (12), Franklin (10), and Lucy (5).  Lovina’s father Abner Chase (85 CT) and her step-mother Hannah 64 (NH) also live in Rochester.

Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  Abner Chase is living with his second wife, Hannah Slade, sister of Susan Slade.  He was listed as a “pauper.”

1860 Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  Oliver Smith (50) and “Vina” (60) are living in Rochester with Stillman Grant (33).  Daughter Lucy is not listed, but Mary is living next door with husband George Laird.
1870 Rochester, Windsor County, VT (dwelling 157).  The census notes that Lovina Smith (59) can read but “cannot write,” nor can her husband Oliver (69).  Their children Frank (29) and Lucy (24) can neither read nor write.  Both are living with their parents.
1880

Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  A widowed Oliver P. Smith (68) is living with his sister Olive and her husband John O. White.  His relationship to the latter is noted as brother-in-law.

Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  Son Joel B. Smith (43) is living with his wife Julina (32) and children Jennie (14), Emma (11), and George (9).
