FEDERAL CENSUS RECORDS

1830 Goshen, Addison County, VT.  The Fuller Smith family is enumerated next to the Horace Brink and William Brink families.  There is one male aged 40-50 (Fuller), one male 5-10 (Isaac), one male 10-15 (Chester), one male 15-20 (Oliver), one female 40-50 (Miriam), one female under 5 (Olive), one female 5-10 (Elizabeth), and one female 10-15 (Unknown).
1840 Goshen, Addison County, VT.  The Fuller Smith family includes one male between the ages of 50-60 (Fuller), two males 15-20 (Chester and Isaac), one female 50-60 (Miriam), and one female 10-15 (Olive?).  They are living next door to William and Polly Brink.  Son Oliver is enumerated separately in the same town with a wife and three young children.  The population of the town at that time was 621.
1850 Rochester, Windsor County, VT (dwelling 119).  Elizabeth (28) and her husband Ephraim Dyer (42) are enumerated within the household of Fuller and Marion Smith.  They have a young son, Squire Guy E. Dyer (6).  No independent value of real estate is listed.
1860 Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  Elizabeth (38) is living next door to Fuller and Marion Smith, but with a new husband, David Root (25).  She has a son, Eugene Dyer (16), and a new baby, not yet named.  Vital records state the name as Ephraim Orlando Root, born 07 November 1859.
1870 Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  The census notes that Elizabeth is able to read and write.  Her son Eugene Dyer (26) and his wife Elizabeth Hadlok (20) are in Rochester also with their daughter Elizabeth C. Dyer (8 months, b. 23 September 1869), and another young girl, Carrie (14).
1880 Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  Elizabeth’s parents were born in CT and NH, which suggests she was indeed a daughter of Fuller and Marion Smith.  Along with Ephraim O. Root, another child is listed in 1880:  Dana L. Root, age 4.  But given Elizabeth’s age at the time, Dana is not likely a biological son.  Elizabeth’s oldest son Eugene Dyer (37) is listed in Rochester also, with his wife, Elizabeth (30), and their daughter Eugenia (11).  Their son Harry S. Dyer was born later that year.
1900 Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  Elizabeth is listed as “Lizzie Root,” born February 1822, age 78, and widowed.  She is the mother of 2 children, 1 living.  She is living with her grandson Harry S. Dyer (b. June 1880) and his wife Alta (b. May 1881).  They married around 1898, and have one child, Leah G. born October 1898.  Ephraim O. Root (40) remains in Rochester, and is unmarried.
NOTES Elizabeth’s first husband was Ephraim Dyer, Jr. son of Ephraim Dyer and Nancy Rowell, who married in Braintree, Orange County, VT 23 December 1806.  Fuller Smith and Miriam Rowell married in the same place 04 December 1809.  Perhaps Nancy Rowell and Miriam Rowell were sisters.  That would mean, of course, that Elizabeth Smith married her first cousin, Ephraim Dyer.   Her brother Chester M. Smith did the same:   he married his first cousin, Sarah M. Smith in 1850.

Daughter of “Mrs. Miriam Smith.”

Sister of “Miss Olive T. Smith.”

Sister-in-law of “Mrs. Sarah M. Smith” and “Mrs. Lovina Smith.“
