MARRIED Harvey Copley, 01 March 1822.  The son of William Copley and Hannah Hand, he was born about 1795 in New York, and died about 1854 in Vermont.  He was described as a “prosperous farmer and exemplary citizen” in a later biography of his son, John.

1.       George Copley, b. about 1822, d. about 1865, murdered by a robber whom he was trying to capture in Idaho (other sources say 1864 in Montana), m. Jane Maria Hatch, 11 December 1855.

2.       Hannah H. Copley, b. 10 March 1823, d. 23 January 1904 in Richland County WI, m. Edward S. Drake of Richland Center, WI.

3.       John Copley, b. 10 April 1825, m. Lura A. Carlisle in 1852, and then Sarah Jane Parker, 25 March 1862.  Lived in Rochester, VT through at least 1870, then moved west to Washington, Sauk County, WI.  As a young man John Copley spent eight months working in a carpet factory in Lowell, MA.  Children:  George William Copley, and Jane Lura Copley, wife of George Selden.

4.       Lois Ann Copley, b. about 1826, d. 21 September 1914 in Richland Center, Richland County, WI, m. William Shelden of Richland Center, WI.

5.       Adaline E. Copley, b. 29 September 1829, d. 11 December 1899 in Richland County, WI, m. Samuel E. Drake, of Richland Center, WI.

6.       Mary J. Copley, b. April 1834, m. Rufus Smith of Pittsfield, VT, April 1858.

7.       Electa Copley, b. about 1839, m. William Capps, and lived near Grand Forks, North Dakota.

1820 Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  The John Emerson household consists of one male between the ages of one male over the age of 45, one male 26-45, one male 16-26, [one male 16-18], one male 10-16, one male under 10, one female over 45, three females 16-26 (including Ruth), 1 female 10-16, and one female under 10.
1830 Goshen, Addison County, VT.  The Harvey Copley household consists of one male between the ages of 30-40, one female 30-40, one female 5-10, and one female under 5.
1840 Goshen, Addison County, VT.  The Harvey Copley family consists of one male between the ages of 40-50, one male 10-15, two males 5-10, one female 30-40, one female 15-20, two females 10-15, and two females 5-10.

Rochester, Windsor County, VT (dwelling 123).  Harvey (55) and Ruth (54) Copley are living with their son George (28), a peddler, and Electa (11), who is attending school.  Real estate $120.

Daughters Hannah (26), Lois (24), Adeline (20), and Mary (16) are living in Lowell, MA while working in the textile mills there.

1860 Rochester, Windsor County, VT.  A widowed Ruth is living with her son, John. 
1870 Washington, Sauk County, WI (dwelling 194).  Ruth is living with her daughter Electa and son-in-law William Capp.  Her daughter Adeline and husband are living in dwelling 203, and daughter Hannah and husband in dwelling 115—all in the same town. 
1880

Troy, St. Croix County, WI.  Ruth is still with daughter Electa Capp (who now has an adopted daughter, Ruth, age 1).

Washington, Sauk County, WI (dwelling 147).  Son John Copley (55), wife Sarah J. (51), and children George W. (17 VT) and Jane L. (15 VT)
