MARRIED Alfred D. Holt, about 1857.  The son of Samuel and Martha Holt, he was born 23 August 1828 in Salisbury, VT, and died 09 December 1912 in MN.

1.       Edwina Elizabeth Holt, b. 20 August 1858 in VT, d. 24 June 1926, m. William Archibald Law about 1880.  He was b. 10 August 1856, and d. 18 April 1927 in Minneapolis, MN.  Children: Ada L. Law, b. 1882.

2.       Ethelbert A. Holt, b. November 1864 in VT, d. 17 May 1923 in MN, m. 1) Fannie E. Raymond, 26 September 1896, 2) Mary Eliza Fay, March 1908.  She was born 15 March 1864, and died 18 April 1944.  Children from first marriage: Alfred R. Holt, b. 07 September 1899, d. 03 June 1865 in San Luis Obispo, California, and Francis E. Holt, b. about 1903.

FEDERAL CENSUS RECORDS 1840 Brandon, Rutland County, VT.  The Carr household consists of 1 male between the ages 15-20 (John or Jedediah?), one female 40-50 (Esther), one female 10-15 (unknown), one female 5-10 (Sarah), and one female under 5 (Elizabeth).
1850

Salisbury, Addison County, VT (dwelling 95).  Sarah Ann (17 VT) is living in the household of John Carr (28 VT), his wife Fidelia (21) and son Charles (1), along with Esther Carr (53), [Jedediah] Clark Carr (30), Horace Carr (24), and Elizabeth Carr (13).  These are surely her widowed mother and siblings.

Salisbury, Addison County, VT (dwelling 149).  Sarah’s future husband Alfred Holt (22) is living in the household of his parents, Samuel (66) and Martha (57) Holt with six siblings.  Real estate $1,700.

1860

Canton, Saint Lawrence County, NY (dwelling 934).  Brother Jno Carr (37 VT), wife Fidelia (31) and children: Charles (10), Loren (9), Lucy A. (7), and Jas. (4 months).  Brother Horace Carr (33) is likewise in Canton (dwelling 948), boarding in the household of Dyer Wescott, whose daughter Lydia (30) he will later marry.

Rutland, Rutland County, VT.  Brother Jed C[lark] Carr (39), wife Pheba (29), and children Alma (6) and Don (4).

1870

Greenvale, Dakota County, MN (dwelling 101).  Brother H.H. Carr (44 VT) and wife Lydia L. (41 NY) have a young son, Everett N. (8 NY).  Real estate $1,500.  Personal state $100.  Sister Elizabeth (30 VT) and husband Francis Howard (46 VT) are living next door (dwelling 102).  Real estate $1,200.  Personal estate $300.  Harry and Esther Thomas are living nearby (dwelling 106).

Chester, Windsor County, VT.  John Carr’s son Loren G. (19) is a farm laborer living within the household of Jerediah (50) and Phebe A. (40) Carr.  Leo Carr (11) is living nearby in the household of John Leach.  Jedediah’s household also includes daughter Alma P. (17) and her husband Perley Smith (20), as well as other children:  Don (14), Marion (6), George (4), and Orcutt (10 months).  Since later census records indicate that John Carr was an “invalid” at this time, it might explain why several of his children are living with other families.  

1880 Greenvale, Dakota County, MN (dwelling 129).  Sarah A. (48 VT) and husband Alfred D. Holt (51 VT) are living with son Ethelbert A. (15 VT).  Also in their household is Francis Howard (52), widower of Elizabeth, listed here as “brother-in-law.” Nearby (dwelling 138) H.H. Carr (54 VT) and wife Lydia L. (50 NY) share their home with Lydia’s brother Alanson Westcott (54). Horace’s father was born in Rhode Island and his mother in Vermont.  The Harry Thomas family is also close (dwelling 142).

Nashua, Hillsborough County, NH.  Ward 6A.  Brother John Carr (58) is enumerated with his wife Fidelia (51), and children Charles (31), Lorin (28), and Leo (20).  John’s father was born in Rhode Island and his mother in Vermont.  He is an invalid, paralyzed for 19 years.

Harvard, Worcester County, MA.  Brother Jedediah C. Carr (59 VT) is widowed is living with his children:  Don C. Carr (24), Marion A. Carr (16), George L. Carr (13), Orcutt N. Carr (10), Alma P. Bigelow (26), and Alma’s children by a previous marriage:  Gracie E. Smith (9) and Phebe B. Smith (4).  Jedediah’s father was born in Rhode Island and his mother in Vermont.

1900

Faribault, Rice County, MN (Ward 3, dwelling 92).  Sarah A. (68, b. April 1832) and husband Alfred D. Holt (71, b. August 1828) have been married for 42 years.  Sarah had three children, two still living.  Her parents are both listed as born in Vermont.  They are living in the household of their son-in-law, William Law (48, b. August 1856 MN) and daughter Edwina E. (40, b. August 1859 VT).  They have been married twenty years, with two children, one still living—Ada L. Law (17, b. January or June 1882 MN).

Greenvale, Dakota County, MN (dwelling 47).  Son Ethelbert A. Holt (35, b. November 1864), a farmer, and wife Fannie E. (32, b. March 1868) have been married for four years.  They have one son, Alfred R. (b. September 1899).

Nashua, Hillsborough County, NH (Ward 7).  Brother John Carr (78, b. April 1822) and wife Fidelia (71, b. February 1829) have been married 41 years.  They had four children, 3 still living.  Also in their household at 20 Mason Street are son Charles (50, b. August 1849), widowed daughter-in-law Grace A. Carr (50, b. June 1849), and granddaughter Hazel M. Carr (12, b. August 1887).   John father’s was born in Rhode Island and his mother in Canada.

1910

St. Paul, Ramsey County, MN.  Living at 346 Cleveland Avenue, Sarah A. (77 VT) has been married to husband Alfred B. Holt (81 VT) for 53 years.  She had three children, two still living.  Both of her parents are listed as born in Vermont.  Also in their household are daughter Edwina E. (30 VT) and her husband William A. Law (30 MN).  Edwina had two children, one living.

Greenvale, Dakota County, MN (dwelling 131).  Son Ethelbert Holt (45), a farmer, and his second wife Mary E. (46) have been married two years.  They are listed with his children from a previous marriage:  Alfred R. (10) and Francis E. (7).  Mary E. has had no children of her own.

1920

St. Paul, Ramsey County, MN.  Sarah A. Holt (87) is living with her daughter Edwina (61) and son-in-law W.A. Law (63), a traveling salesman of Scottish descent.  Sarah’s parents are both listed as born in New York.

Bridgewater, Rice County, MN.  Son Ethelbert Holt (55), wife Mary E. (55) and son Francis E. (17).

MINNESOTA CEMETERY INSCRIPTION INDEX

Sarah Ann Holt (nee: Carr), wife of Alfred D. Holt, is buried in Northfield City Cemetery, Rice County, MN (section B6).  She was born 20 April 1832 in Vermont, and died 23 October 1925 in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Her husband Alfred D. Holt was born 23 August 1828 in Salisbury, VT, and died 09 December 1912.  He is buried in Northfield City Cemetery (section B6).  His spouse is listed as “Sarah Ann Carr.”

Her son Ethelbert A. Holt was born in 1864 in Vermont, and died 17 May 1923.  Cemetery records list his parents are Sarah Ann Carr and Alfred D. Holt.  He is buried in Northfield City Cemetery (section B29).

Her daughter Edwina Elizabeth (Holt) Law was born 20 August 1858 and died 24 June 1926.  She is buried in Northfield City Cemetery (section C21).

Her sister Elizabeth Howard (nee: Carr), wife of Francis Howard, is also buried in Northfield City Cemetery (section B6).  She was born 28 August 1837, and died 04 April 1876. 

Rev. Francis Howard was born 06 August 1827 in Orange County, VT., and died 12 June 1901.  He married Elizabeth Carr in March 1855.  he is buried in Northfield City Cemetery (section B6).

Her brother Horace H. Carr was born in 1826, and died 29 April 1894.   He is buried in Northfield City Cemetery, Rice County, MN (section A24)—the same cemetery as Esther W. Thomas.  His wife Lydia L. was born in 1830, and died 21 August 1915.

Everett H. Carr, son of Horace and Lydia, was born May 1862, and died 21 July 1874 at the age of 12.  He, too, is buried in Northfield City Cemetery (section A24).

NOTES

Sarah Ann Carr’s father Nathan was the son of William and Elizabeth Carr, and the brother of Caleb Carr and Esther (Carr) Jones.  Therefore, she was the niece of both.

Proximity to the Esther W. Thomas in Greenvale, MN suggests a possible relationship (could they have been sisters?).
