Resume and Cover Letter

Draft – 2 copies due in class Tues., Jan 29

Rewrite – 1 copy – on good paper - due in class Tues., Feb. 12

(Final – due on good paper - with Academic Plan, Apr. 30.)

Purpose:
        1. To create a good resume that will serve you well in seeking job or internship opportunities.
        2. To practice writing an effective cover letter.
        3. To improve your skills and the work of your peers by reviewing and critiquing their drafts.

I.  Resume

Prepare a one-page resume (2 pgs max; 1 pg is strongly recomended) following the guidelines provided in class by Stephanie Kaza.  Consult also the handout.
Include the following elements to the extent relevant for you:

a)  Name, address, and phone -- both current and permanent (if different)
b)  Education -- high school, college, abroad
c)  Employment -- which could be framed as Professional Development, Work Experience, Related Experience, etc. For each entry, be sure to provide job title, organization, location,    job description in brief, and dates worked.
d)  Volunteer Activities -- if environmental, could be combined with environmentally-related work experience.  For each entry, be sure to provide:   job title, organization, location, job description in brief, and dates worked.
e)  Honors and Awards (if there are at least several)
f)  Interests/Avocations
g) "References Available Upon Request" or equivalent
Tips:  Readability and overall presentation is extremely important for an effective resume.  Your peer editors and I will look for these qualities even in your first draft!  A resume should be easy to scan quickly, so pay attention to layout.  Make use of boldface or all capital letters or underlining (but not all three at once!) to highlight headings.  Use columns to set off information, i.e. years of employment from name of job.

II.  Cover letter

Prepare a one page cover letter for an actual job or internship you are interested in.  (You can find sample jobs or internships on the ENVS bulletin board or in the resource center notebooks.)  Follow guidelines suggested in class and in the handout.  Keep the letter to one page and at least two paragraphs.

Print quality:  Use the highest quality printer you can find – preferably a laser printer.  Laser printers not only look sharp in the original but also reproduce well when you need multiple copies.  Switching to a laser printer after you’ve formatted your resume for another printer is likely to ruin your formatting.  To save time, try to start with the printer you plan to use for your final document.
