Course objective:

Our goal is to deeply understand the matrix equation $\mathbf{A}\vec{x}=\vec{b},$ the Fundamental Theorem of Linear Algebra, why having a small Left Null Space is cool, and everything about the following Picture of Bigness.

Who, What, Where, etc.:

  • Basics:

    Deliverator: Prof. Peter Dodds.

Nowhereness: This is a free online course to take at your own pace.

The course is structured with 15 weekisodes, making one seasonester. You can replace weeks with days, months, years, per your preference.

Over the seasonester, we follow the story of $\mathbf{A}\vec{x}=\vec{b}$.

Each week comprises (truly exciting) course material (notes and videos) and one level (assignment) or challenge level (a midterm exam).

The first 12 weeks are made up of 3 sets of 4 week cycles, each of which has 3 levels and 1 challenge level.

Weeks 13 and 14 bring us to the triumphant conclusion of $\mathbf{A}\vec{x}=\vec{b}$'s tale: Singular Value Decomposition.

In week 15, you take on the final boss level.

  • Content delivery:

All episodes (recorded lectures) and slides are organized here and here, and a youtube playlist is here.

Follow @matrixologyvox for very occasional pipings up about matrices and related things.

  • Origin Story:

Introduction to Linear Algebra (3rd or 4th or 5th edition) by Gilbert Strang (published by Wellesley-Cambridge Press).

    The textbook is entirely optional.

Strang (a total champion) provides a good portion of the 5th edition online here.

    The complete syllabus lives here.

  • Awesomeness level:

Very, very high. Matrixology is spectacular. The course has a natural overall arc that revolves around the Big Picture below.
