What is Propaganda?  Writing Exercise 23 Jan 2017

-Use of Media to persuade people to believe in a a specific point of view.  Campaign commercials spotlighting a negative view of the opposing candidates.  Political messages.  I think advertisements are not propaganda because the ads want you to buy something not change your beliefs or opinions.

-Political Advertisements, slogans, directed at a specific group.  Examples: War Propaganda, Women's March, Environmental Movements, Global Warming.  Used to rally people together, can be positive or negative.

-Twisting the facts for a biased purpose, ex. Cigarette campaigns of the past "Cigarettes are Healthy!"  Yes, companies utilize propaganda in advertising.

-Hitler and his campaign against Jews and other minorities.  Distorted and magnified opinions.  A distortion of truth that appeals to emotions.  Mass produced.  Target audience.

-State-run News with an inherit bias, spreads misinformation to promote an agenda.  Ex. War, North Korea's News Agencies.  Not sure if advertising is propaganda.  Corporate agenda.  Nazi Germany.  Marginalizes and weakens groups.

-Media that demonstrates a certain belief or viewpoint.  Nazi propaganda WWII, Fox News supporting Donald Trump.

-Anything that is used to persuade and influence and audience.  Ex. Recent presidential election parties used techniques to gain followers.  I think advertising is a form of propaganda.

-Persuading people to think a certain way.  Ex. Commercials that make you feel sorry for people in order to donate $.  I believe ads are propaganda.

-When the media provides the public with inaccurate depictions of things.  Prejudice, Stereotypes, uses fear, humiliation, division.  Examples Jews with big noses, blacks as monkeys with big lips.  Using flaske information, exaggeration, and fabrication.

-Often provocative and is trying to send or seonate or persuade a powerful message to an audience.  Used to oppress certain groups.  Some types of advertising could be considered propaganda.

-Make the media more interesting to the viewer/reader.  Example: Foreshadowing - hints of what to expect.  Advertising is a method of propaganda.

-Propaganda is distinct to marketing: Propaganda is used by Governments, not only facism or communism, but here in our democracy.  Ex. Cartoons from WW II depicting Japanese as monkeys, Hitler depicting jews as big-nosed trolls.  Propaganda is used by climate change deniers showing scientist as snobby left elitist who laugh at the conservative working man.  Propaganda is used to generalize and marginalize.  Marketing can work the same way, but for $ gain.
