This image, taken by Louis McAllister facing southeast on Main Street from the intersection with Spear Street, was published in the 1925 Burlington Annual Report. The photograph depicts a pastoral scene containing plenty of open space, farms, and vegetation. In the background, one can make out the peaks of the Green Mountains on the horizon.

Today, the scene is hardly the pastoral country view of 1925. The road has been widened to five lanes, the stately elms lining the road are long gone, and a shopping center has been installed at the foot of the hill, marked by repeating white gable peaks to the right at the bottom of the hill, next to the intersection with the once-rural East Avenue. Although traffic lights, highway signs, and tall poles clutter the horizon, the familiar outline of the mountains off in the distance reveal that this is, indeed, the same panorama.
