Grove Street Bridge Construction: July 27, 1938

This image, dated July 27, 1938, shows early bridge work from a point to the east of the construction site on Grove Street. In this picture, workers have removed the old plank and dry stone wall structure and installed a corrugated steel plate arch on concrete foundations. Concrete footings are in place and the structure is ready to receive its brick headwall.

The scaffolding that has been erected on the opposite side of the bridge in order to build its masonry parapet walls is visible through the steel arch.

This McAllister photograph, also dated July 27, 1938, was taken from the stream looking west to the Grove Street Bridge. In this picture, workers have removed the old plank and dry stone wall structure and installed a multiple steel plate arch on concrete foundations. Scaffolding has been erected and masons are in the midst of constructing brick parapet walls, where they will eventually install ornamental lighting on four end piers.[1]

This photo shows the entire bridge construction project from the north looking south down Grove Street. From this perspective, one can see the corrugated steel arch that has been installed under the future bridge protruding to the left, as well as scaffolding erected to the right of the site to aid in building the brick bridge parapet walls. In the photo on the right, workers are excavating materials in the foreground for construction purposes. In the background of both photos on the left is the W. C. Kirby garage and on the right is the Charles A. Kirby residence at 99 Grove Street.
