Week of Sept 21 - Friday 25, 2015.

CALS 183: Students go to one lecture and one lab per week
Lecture A (CRN 90140) Tuesdays 2:50-4:05pm L/L Commons 315
Lecture B (CRN 91368) Thursdays 1:15-2:30pm L/L Commons 315

Please put away all electronic devices (laptops, smart phones, Ipods, etc.) and take out something to write with and paper.

Tips From the TAS:

1.  Hook should be obvious at beginning of your your presentation.  Be creative!
   
2.  Be Passionate
3.  Pauses should be Obvious - Two Full Seconds of silence.
4.  Repeat any questions at the end of your presentation.
5.  It is the job of the Master of Ceremonies (MC) to ask for questions, NOT the speaker!
6.  End with "Thank You"
7.  Stand close to the Audience.
8.  Don't leave the lab or enter in the middle of a presentation - wait until speaker is finished.
9. **** FOLLOW THE CRITIQUE SHEETS **** and practice in front of friends and get feedback!
   

Assignments & Announcements:

1. Practice your dramatic reading or informational presentation in front of others and get feedback.
2. Finish Reading Present Yourself.  Quiz NEXT WEEK : Sept 28-Oct 1 in lecture.  Be on time or lose points!!!!
3. Bring Flash Drive (2+ Gigs) to lab when you present.
4. Check Syllabus (CALS 001, CALS 183) speaking schedule for when you are presenting and your lab role.
5. Outside Speech Critique assignment.  UVM lecture calendar site. Example: Al Gore Tues Oct 6 evening at Ira Allen Chapel
   
6. Class Attendance Policy from syllabus: "Unexcused absences from lecture or lab result in 1% reduction of your final course grade for each unexcused absence.  Attendance will be taken each lecture and lab.  If you are late, you will be marked absent.  This is not a class to cut and get notes from someone else. This is a class where you must come to lecture and lab a few minutes early every time and be ready to participate for the entire lecture or lab.  Athletes are excused only for Varsity Games (and work is expected to be made up within one week).  No students have earned an A in this course who have had more than two unexcused absences. If you can not make a class, you must notify your instructor before the class.  Notification after the class will result in a zero for that class and assignment.  If you miss a speaking assignment without notifying your instructor before the class or if you miss a speaking assignment because you were not prepared, you will earn a zero for that assignment. Only extreme legitimate prior-notification absences (death in the family, serious illness, or accident) will be made up.  For an excuse to be legitimate you must contact your college's Deans office (for CALS Deans Office Rose Laba, 656-0289, rlaba@uvm.edu) and they will notify Dr. Leonard.  This should be a very rare occurrence.  The TAs and Dr. Leonard need to hear from the Deans Office for an excuse to be legitimate."  
7. CALS 001 students, visit with your academic advisor and have them sign the Advisor Meeting Form.  Join a club or organization.
